There are three basic levels of burns. The first or first-degree burns affect only the outer layer of the skin causing redness and can be sensitive to the touch. Usually sun burns are of this class or level.

The next level or second-degree burns involve the underlying layers usually forming blisters and acute pain.

The third-degree burn goes much deeper and can even involve muscle. There usually is little pain as nerves have been damaged. These burns are very difficult to heal as the tissue has lost it's ability to regenerate.
